Editing, Leadership, and Teambuilding

Collaborating on the Publications

As a member of two publications, I have learned the importance of editing, leadership, and team building, as well as how they all play into each other.

As a coverage editor on The Muse, I am responsible for everything from pitching story ideas to fleshing out the initial drafts of articles. I collaborate closely with the writers, as well as the managing editors, to make sure that the writing reflects the audience that we are catering to: the local community. In order to maintain the integrity of the publication, I am always vigilantly paying attention to every detail and constantly ensuring that we are covering in any and all areas of news that we can. As a student-run publication, it is critical that we remember who our audience is and try our best to represent them through our works, and as a coverage editor, that is one of my top priorities this year.

On the right are three examples of the edits that I have provided my staffers on their first drafts. As one of three coverage editors for the publication, it is my shared responsibility to work diligently with writers to take their stories and elevate them to the next level, whether that be restructuring and reformatting the story, asking them to find out more information (through research and further interviews), or maybe even switching the angle.

With being a content manager on DSOA Today, I have the responsibility to help my peers. Whether that is giving them critiques on their news package, providing them assistance with filming, or coming up with ideas, I am in charge of my keeping my class period on track so we can produce quality and veritable videos for the morning news.

While holding leadership roles on both publications, I strive to continue to learn more about the facets of journalism. Everyday, we put in the effort to make sure that we, as student journalists, are putting out reliable stories to the school and community; editing, leadership, and team building are important factors in attaining that.
